Under the Mountain Maurice Gee

Review by Estella, from Corinna School, Porirua
I’m Estella and I’m nine years old. I sometimes bake with my sister. My favourite sports are tennis, badminton and netball.
Under the mountain by Maurice Gee is the book I am reading. Theo and Rachael are twins. Mr Jones is helping them learn more of their powers to battle adults with stronger powers. The Wilberforces want to battle so Theo and Rachael don’t find out about their powers.
It’s hard to get into at first but it’s worth keeping going because there’s lots of action and adventure.
Years 6,7,and 8 will be gripped by this book. (Appears in the May 2010 edition of Around the Bookshops, and is supplied courtesy of Barbara Murison.)
A Pair of Jacks: Jack's Four Jackdaws and Jack of the Gorgons Michael Lawrence, illustrated by Jack Ross

Review by Jesfa from Corinna School, Porirua
Kia ora. My name is Jesfa and I’m 10 years old. I am good at playing rugby and I go to Corinna School.
The book I am reviewing is A pair of Jacks by Michael Lawrence. Four brothers, all named Jack, go out to seek their fortune.
I got sucked into the book because it was descriptive and funny. I would really like to read this. (Appears in the May 2010 edition of Around the Bookshops, and is supplied courtesy of Barbara Murison.)
Bones Maureen Crisp

Review by Pearl of Great Price, from Corinna School
Talofa. My name is Pearl of Great Price.
I read Bones by Maureen Crisp. It's about twins who find a skeleton and try to if it’s an animal or a person. Their unhelpful dog runs away with some of the bones. This is a Kiwi Bites book. It was easy to get into and just right for me. Year 4s and up are sure to enjoy this book. (Appears in the May 2010 edition of Around the Bookshops, and is supplied courtesy of Barbara Murison.)
Beast Quest: Fang the Bat Fiend Adam Blade

Review by Faze Harper from Corinna School, Porirua
Ki ora, my name is Faze and I am eight years old. I like playing games and soccer.
The book is Beast Quest: Fang the Bat Fiend, by Adam Blade.
Tom needs to get four potions to save his mother who has vanished – magically kidnapped by Velmal the evil wizard. Will Tom get his mother back? Wll he kill the bat fiend? Action starts on the very first page so you get into the book really fast and it keeps going so you are never bored.
People who like action should read this book. AND at he end you get a sneak peek of the first bit of the next book in the series. (Appears in the May 2010 edition of Around the Bookshops, and is supplied courtesy of Barbara Murison.)
Yuck's Robotic Bottom Matt and Dave

Review by Samah Mohammed, from Corinna School, Porirua
Asalaam aleikum. I’m Samah Mohammed. I’m nearly 11 and cooking is what I love to do best. The book that I’m reviewing is called Yuck, and is written by both Matt and Dave. This is part of a series and each book has two stories. I loved it to bits. There were some parts that just made you want to read the book again and again. It was fun and disgusting too.
Yuck invents some really gross things. Can his inventions win first prize in the school competition? You’ll have to read to find out.
I recommend this book for Yr 3s up. (Appears in the May 2010 edition of Around the Bookshops, and is supplied courtesy of Barbara Murison.)
21st Century Lives: Millionaires Clive Gifford

Review by Cheyne from Corinna School, Porirua
Kia ora I’m Cheyne, and I’m 9 years old.
My favourite spots are netball and soccer.
21st century lives; millionaires by Clive Gifford is a non-fiction book. You can read a whole page or you can dip in and out of the pages. I got sucked into the book because it’s all about millionaires. Also, the book has websites so that you can find out more about each millionaire. Did you know that J K Rowling got her name from her grandma. Did you know that Elle Macpherson sells her undies for $80! No wonder she’s a millionaire. ((Appears in the May 2010 edition of Around the Bookshops, and is supplied courtesy of Barbara Murison.)
The Word Witch Margaret Mahy, illustrated by David Elliot, edited by Tessa Duder

Review by Maxine Margret, from Corinna School, Porirua
Kia ora. Maxine Margret is my name and 10 is my age. Reading is what I enjoy at school, but I enjoy music out of school.
Margaret Mahy is a great author, and this book has great illustrations. There are some tongue-tricky poems which snap you in. She invents her own words like ‘rockadiles’ and ‘umbrellaphants’. They are fascinating because when you hear umbrellaphants, you think umbrellas and elephants.
I recommend The Word Witch to Year 4s and up. (Appears in the May 2010 edition of Around the Bookshops, and is supplied courtesy of Barbara Murison.)
