Emily Dobson is a poet, and her first collection of poetry, Box of Bees, was published in 2005. Born in Hastings, Dobson’s family were apiarists, an occupation which is a central focus of her first collection. Dobson completed the MA in Creative Writing at Victoria University in 2004 and was awarded the Adam Prize and the prestigious 2005 Schaeffer Fellowship to the Iowa Writers’ Workshop in the United States. Her work has appeared in journals and magazines such as Takahe, Sport and the Listener.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dobson, Emily (1981 – ) is a poet. Born in Hastings, she grew up in a family of apiarists in rural Hawke’s Bay, which provided her with rich material for her first collection of poetry, A Box of Bees (Victoria University Press, 2005).

Dobson attended the MA in Creative Writing at Victoria University in 2004 and was awarded the Adam Prize for her folio of work which became A Box of Bees.

The art and science of the bee-keeping business provides a backdrop for the poems in A Box of Bees. The poems are personal, tender and sensuous – exploring the process of honey production and family relationships, love and sex.

She was awarded the prestigious 2005 Schaeffer Fellowship to the Iowa Writers’ Workshop in the United States, where she spent a year studying poetry and writing.

Her work has appeared in literary journals and magazines such as brief, Takahe, Sport and the Listener.

Emily Dobson lives in rural Hawkes Bay and she is mother to Ralph.
