Creative New Zealand

Background
Creative New Zealand is New Zealand's main arts development agency.
Its role is to promote the arts of New Zealand, support artists and encourage more New Zealanders to enjoy the arts.
It does this by funding a wide range of projects by artists and arts organisations, advocating for the arts, and undertaking initiatives and research projects.
Literary opportunities connected to Creative New Zealand are listed below. Many have individual pages on this website, and you will also find more information on the Creative New Zealand website.

The Arts Board
Support is available for writing and publishing projects and other literary activities such as literary festivals, under three Creative New Zealand funding programmes: New Work; Creative and Professional Development; Presentation, Promotion and Audience Development.
Berlin Writers' Residency
The biennial Creative New Zealand Berlin Writers’ Residency is funded through the organisation’s Arts Board. Worth approximately $65,000, it covers the rental cost of an apartment situated in the heart of Berlin, and provides a $3000 a month stipend and travel allowance to the recipient.
Louis Johnson New Writers' Bursary
Interest from a monetary gift, made in 1989 from leading poet Louis Johnson’s estate, contributes each year to the Louis Johnson New Writers’ Bursary. Previously published writers at any early stage of their career, who apply to the July deadline for a writing grant under the New Work funding programme, are automatically considered for the bursary. This is awarded by the Arts Board.
Writers in Residence at Educational Institutes
The Arts Board contributes part of the funding for university writers-in-residence programmes at Auckland, Waikato, Victoria and Canterbury Universities, and for the Dunedin College of Education children’s writer-in-residence. Applicants should direct their enquiries to the relevant institution.
New Zealand Authors' Fund
Any resident New Zealand author with books in New Zealand libraries may be eligible to register with the New Zealand Authors' Fund. The Fund exists to compensate authors for the loss of royalties due to the use of their books in libraries, and authors must be eligible to receive royalties for each registered book in order to receive compensatory payment. The Fund does not provide literary grants. Registration is an annual procedure and is accepted between 1 January and 30 April each year. For full information and registration form write to the Administrator of the New Zealand Authors' Fund at Creative New Zealand.
Todd New Writers' Bursary
The Todd Corporation contributes a half-share of the Todd New Writers’ Bursary, which each year allows a promising new writer to work for six months full time on an approved project. Previously published writers at an early stage of their career, who apply to the July deadline for a writing grant under the New Work funding programme, are automatically considered for the bursary. This is awarded by the Arts Board.
