The Book Publishers Association of New Zealand Reviewer of the Year and Review Page or Programme Awards

'A wise scepticism', wrote James Russell Lowell, 'is the first attribute of a good critic.'

The Book Publishers Association of New Zealand (BPANZ) Reviewer of the Year and Review Page or Programme Awards salute and reward those wise sceptics who write, edit and present pertinent, high-quality reviews for a wide variety of New Zealand audiences. These awards recognise the vital importance of articulate, responsible, informed criticism in maintaining a healthy literary culture.

To recognise the breadth and diversity of quality reviewing in this country the judges select a winner of each award. They also have the discretion to present up to two highly commended awards in each category.

Reviewer of the Year Award
This award aims to encourage and promote high-quality book reviewing in New Zealand. It will be made to the reviewer who, in the opinion of the judges, presents the portfolio of the highest standard and quality and in a style relevent to their target audience. The award winner receives a $1000 prize.

Best Review Page or Programme Award
This award aims to encourage and promote high-quality book reviewing in New Zealand media. It will be made to that publication, website or programme which, in the opinion of the judges, presents the selection of highest quality book reviews in a style that is relevant to their target audience. Reviews will be presented in a regular, dedicated format. They may be presented as a page, or section which is part of a newspaper, journal, magazine or website. They may be presented as a regular feature of a broadcast televisioin or radio programme. Publications or programmes which are wholly literary in focus are eligible.

The BPANZ Reviewer of the Year and Review Page or Programme Award are administered by Booksellers New Zealand, on behalf of the Montana New Zealand Book Awards Management Committee. They are generously supported by the Book Publishers Association of New Zealand.
