Competition Noticeboard

NATIONAL:
CLL/NZSA Research Grants
The New Zealand Society of Authors is pleased to announce two new grants for research towards a writing project.
Findings from our 2007 survey of authors’ incomes and contact with a number of members show there is a strong feeling of a lack of support for non-fiction writers.
Non-fiction requires a significant investment from the author prior to publication: research costs such as travel, accommodation, research material and photographs are direct costs to the author. In the survey several non-fiction authors signified that these costs were now making non-fiction writing too expensive to undertake.
Having funding available to provide research fellowships to support research for a project would be a means to address some of this need. Copyright Licensing Limited has agreed to sponsor two such awards for three years.
One of the grants, for either fiction or non-fiction, will be for a fellowship at the Stout Centre in Wellington.
Early in 2007 discussions were held with the Stout Centre director, Lydia Wevers, regarding reinstatement of the Stout Fellowship which began in 1991 with a grant of $5000 from the QEII Arts Council and later sponsored by The Readers’ Digest who carried on funding it until 1996.
This new award will offer a study at the Stout Research Centre for up to three months, access to VUW facilities (Internet, printers, library, secretarial services, photocopying and the kitchen), as well as the $3,500 award.
The other CLL Research Award, also for $3,500 and for either fiction or non-fiction, will be awarded to a project-based application where the applicant specifies where the research is to take place.
For application forms please contact NZSA National Office programmes@nzauthors.org.nz

The Landfall Essay Competition 2008
Due to a change in the Landfall production programme, the submission due date for the 2008 Landfall Essay Competition, New Zealand’s most prestigious award of its type has been extended to 5 pm, 30 July 2008.
The prize, worth $2500 and a year’s subscription to the journal, will be judged by novelist and poet Martin Edmond. Past winners have included an academic, a taxi-driver, a human rights activist and a photographer: the prize has been awarded variously to senior and up-and-coming writers.
The purpose of the competition remains as it was at the outset: to encourage New Zealand writers to think aloud about New Zealand culture, and to revive and sustain the tradition of vivid, contentious and creative essay writing in this country—as embodied in the non-fiction of early Landfall contributors such as Bill Pearson, in the essays of past winners of this competition, and in the essays the journal continues to publish.
Essays may be on any topic, though there is a limit of 6000 words, and work must not have been previously published. Writers will be either New Zealand citizens or permanent residents. Only one entry per person will be accepted, and Landfall reserves the right to publish both the winning and shortlisted entries at the editor’s discretion.
- Manuscripts should be supplied in hard and soft copies, with text saved as RTF, MS Word or text-only files on a CD. Email entries will not be accepted.
- Two hard copies of manuscripts are required. These should be typed with double-line spacing and a wide left-hand margin.
- The name, address and telephone number of the author should appear on a separate sheet of the manuscript.
- Entries should be addressed to: Landfall Essay Competition, Otago University Press, PO Box 56, Dunedin, New Zealand.
