The School for Young Writers is a Christchurch-based non-profit society that teaches, inspires and publishes the work of keen young writers aged 8 to 18. Established in 1993, the School has developed a range of services including the following:

Workshops in Schools: Small groups of able writers work with a specialist tutor for 2-3 days to develop and extend skills. There is a real hum of activity in these groups, which usually end with an informal booklet of work done and a performance for parents, teachers and peers.

Correspondence Programme: For individuals or groups in their own time or at school. Each student receives detailed written feedback so that interested parents and teachers can share in the learning experience. Excellent PD for teachers and home schoolers.

Arts Centre of Christchurch Workshops: For those living in or near Christchurch, classes for various age groups led by specially trained and experienced tutors.

Write On magazine: Twice a year, the School publishes a selection from the writing done by students in the above options. Highly regarded as a reading/writing resource in schools, this 32-page magazine is available for a small annual subscription. Schools that buy class sets are eligible to send contributions.

RE-DRAFT:
Each year the School for Young Writers sponsors a competition that is open to all teenage writers. Judges choose the best entries and these are published in an attractive early the following year -- Re-Draft 3 in 2004, Re-Draft 4 in 2005, and so on. The School for Young Writers is delighted to be able to provide emerging writers with this platform for their work, and the standard is very high indeed.
