I was excited to read this book. Firstly because it is a history of Aotearoa - my homeland - and secondly, because it is written and illustrated by renowned New Zealand author and illustrator Gavin Bishop.
This is a substantial book - large in size with a bright hardcover and inside, a comprehensive history of Aotearoa beginning right from Gondwana to into the future. The front cover is engaging and draws you in with the iconic long white cloud and familiar Gavin Bishop style illustrations. The beautiful and detailed illustrations tell our country’s story along with the many captions and interesting pieces of history. I didn’t know the first free Kindergarten opened in 1889 in Dunedin! The contents page lists topics including Voyages to New Zealand, The Curse of the Musket, and Māori Voices Call Out. This book is accessible for primary aged children as well as older readers. It is jam packed with information!
This is a book for poring over, exploring and returning to often. I certainly will be.
