This is a colourfully illustrated tale of Funky Chicken’s journey around some strange new planets. After building his rocket, he takes off on his adventure to be the first ever chook astronaut. His adventure does not go quite as well as he had planned, and some of the new creatures that he meets are not very friendly. Funky Chicken finally lands back on the farm and happily reunites with his friends, Bob and Sue.
The vocabulary used is sure to appeal to the younger reader (bum-spotted leader) as well as providing useful teaching points for extending vocabulary knowledge (destined, enquired etc.). The entertaining illustrations and book size make it ideal for a read aloud to a class of 5–7 year olds, although older children will still enjoy reading it for themselves.
It is written in a fun rhyming style that would lend itself to the classroom teacher pausing while the students predict the final word in each two lines. Students would enjoy painting their own space creatures or building their own rockets.
The CD comes with four audio (narration and song) and two video (slideshow) tracks. A fun read!
