My students were familiar with other books in this series so they already knew the characters, including Scarface Claw. They enjoyed the rhythm and rhyme of the text and the familiar illustrations that support the text. The tension of the story was built with the use of capital letters in the last sentence on the second page - “Down past the letter box, no time to stop, went Tom in a hurry – WITH SCARFACE ON TOP!” We enjoyed the alliteration “a lumbering logging truck loaded with logs” while predicting what might happen next. The text also introduced new vocabulary such as “hollered and waved…..ranted and raved” and the illustrations as well as the surrounding text supported their predictions of what these words might mean.
The rhyme and rhythm of the text on each page with illustrations that also tell the story make this book a great read aloud book to share with younger children aged from 3-7 years.
