Dealing with the death of a loved one is difficult at any age but it is particularly hard for young children. This is a poignant story for younger children that deals with loss, grief and change in a sympathetic way.
Wolfgang and his friends all feel very sad and confused when they hear the news that their special friend and mentor, the Grand Wolf has died.Although some euphemisms are used to tell what has happened, ‘His body was old and a star shining bright, gently guided him off in the still of the night.’” it is very clear to the reader that the Grand Wolf has gone and things will never be the same. The Illustrations are simple, clear and bright in contrast to sadness of the story.
Avril McDonald is the founder of Feel Brave.com and author of the Feel Brave Series of books. She describes these books as ‘little stories about big feelings for 4–7-year-olds.’I recommend this book not only for those who are going through grief but as a lovely read and a way to open up a thoughtful discussion about change.
