Bernard Steeds is a short story writer. His first collection of stories, Water, was published in 2002. Nicola Salmond writes, ‘Author Bernard Steeds show[s] sensitivity, wisdom and a deft touch.’ He has worked extensively as a journalist and as political editor of the Evening Post. Steeds' short stories have appeared in anthologies and on National Radio, and he won the 1998 Sunday Star-Times Short Story Competition. In 2000 his story Ice was highly commended, again in the Sunday Star-Times competition.

Steeds was born in Levin. He moved to Wellington to attend Victoria University where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in History. He went on to complete a Diploma in Journalism at Canterbury University and postgraduate studies in communcations at Massey.
Steeds has worked as a journalist, public relations consultant, and as a contract researcher, writer and editor.
Steeds' short stories have appeared in various anthologies, including the 2009 Penguin Book of Contemporary New Zealand Short Stories. In 1998 Steeds' story The Sea As Past won the Sunday Star-Times Short Story Competition. In 2000 his story 'Ice' was highly commended in the Sunday Star-Times competition. Both of these stories are included in his collection Water.
