Wellington based writer, editor and translator.

WATTIE, Nelson (1939- ) is a writer, editor and translator.

Nelson Wattie was born in Napier. He is a graduate of Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Wuppertal. Professionally, he has worked as a lecturer, translator and editor.

Wattie has taught New Zealand literature at universities in Cologne, Frankfurt and Mannheim, he has also lectured in Italy, France, Belgium and Denmark. Wattie has published widely in both German and English, in journals and books in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Holland New Zealand and Malta.

Wattie’s books in German include: Katherine Mansfield: Sun & Moon (Reclam, 1977), Nation und Literatur (Bouvier, 1980) and Neuseeland (Bucher, 1991).

He is perhaps best known as the co-editor, with Roger Robinson, of The Oxford Companion to New Zealand Literature (Oxford University Press, 1998) and as the revising editor of The Reed Dictionary of New Zealand English (Reed, 2001)

In a long and varied career, Wattie has also worked as an actor, a radio scriptwriter, a reviewer and a professional singer.

Nelson Wattie lives in Wellington.
