I used the CD and book with my class. They quickly noticed and enjoyed the rhyme and rhythm of the text. The use of different fonts and colours added to the enjoyment of the reading experience.
The rich language such as, “The road to Granny’s house was tight, bumpy and rough. For those shiny big engines, it was just too tough,” introduces children to new vocabulary in a fun way. The repeating chorus is a phrase that the children can repeat.
The colourful illustrations drawn from the little fire engine’s perspective mirror a small child’s view of the world, and there is an underlying message that even the smallest person or fire engine has something to contribute.
The book is a good size for sharing with a class and is easy to hold. The CD enhanced the reading experience.
