The musical duo the Topp Twins with illustrator Jenny Cooper bring this children’s classic song to life with a distinctively Kiwi flavour and even manage a few surprise twists at the end just to spice things up.
The CD that accompanies the book has 2 versions - track one with a full mix and vocals and track two with an instrumental mix. The Topp Twins deliver a lively and funny rendition of this song. The inside blurb notes that they see their growing list of children’s book titles as a way to encourage children to enjoy books. They certainly make it fun to read and sing along.
I loved the colourful and at times quirky illustrations. Old MacDonald, with his scrawny, skinny legs and old school gumboots is one such example. As he interacts with the farm animals, we see his expressions showing joy, disappointment and despair. The animals have personalities all of their own and Old MacDonald’s rusty old tractor on the front cover is just delightful! On the inside blurb, Jenny Cooper talks about the colours she has used in the illustrations and comments that she used mainly browns- no pink, purple or blue at all! Look carefully though, because apparently Old MacDonald is wearing purple undies.
