The Safari is a wonderful place to visit and to find as many animals as possible but when your class and teacher really want to see one particular animal – the hippopotamus – it turns into a class treasure hunt looking for this wonderful creature.
The illustrations carry the reader along on a journey to find the missing hippopotamus. There are looks of detailed determination on all the children’s faces, even when they think they have found the missing animal and have caught something quite different!
The author has specifically named one character – Liam, who can always be found at the back of the class line. He is the one who can see the hippopotamus and is quietly trying to attract his teacher’s attention to let her know that he sees the animal. The illustrator has quite cleverly shown us, the reader, the ‘missing’ hippopotamus lightly sketched and hidden within the illustrations, letting us see what Liam can see.
A lovely very English story where the children call their teacher ‘Miss’, and the reader can join in with its repetitive rhymes and exclamations of animals NOT being a hippopotamus.
